ICON

For Toyota Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Runner owners asking which suspension kit is best for overlanding, ICON Vehicle Dynamics is one of the most proven answers in the truck world. Its staged suspension systems bundle lift-height coilovers, rear shocks, and tubular or billet upper control arms into matched packages, so you get a complete, balanced setup instead of mixing parts. If you want a truck that rides better than stock on the road and stays composed on washboard trails, this is where you start.

Truck suspension upgrades work differently than car coilovers. A Stage 1 or 2 system typically pairs adjustable coilovers with new upper control arms to correct alignment geometry at 1-3 inches of lift, while rear shocks and lift blocks or leaf options level the stance. Beyond that, look at billet upper control arms with ICON's Delta Joint ball-joint alternative for high-articulation durability, skid plates for underbody protection, and reinforcement brackets that keep the front suspension safe under hard use. Check your exact year and model before ordering, since Tacoma generations change mounting points.

FOX is the off-road racing icon — its DSC-adjustable coilovers and bypass shocks come straight from desert-racing development, with a firmer, high-speed-biased damping character. Bilstein is the German monotube specialist, and its monotube gas-pressure design is why its truck dampers are known for consistent fade-free performance under load. King Shocks takes the pure motorsport route, building hand-assembled racing coilovers for the serious off-road crowd. Browse the full suspension collection to compare truck systems side by side, or see aftermarket control arms for UCA and lower-link upgrades.

Two standouts from the sampled products: the ICON rear coilover conversion kit for the 2010-21 Lexus GX460 and 2003-09 GX470 replaces the factory rear air/spring setup with true coilovers for better articulation, and the ICON Stage 2 suspension system for the 2024 Tacoma bundles a 1.25-3 inch lift with tubular control arms in one matched kit. Our guide to improving your Toyota's look pairs well with a stance upgrade like this.

Do I need upper control arms with a lift?

Yes, once you lift a truck about 2 inches or more. Stock arms run out of alignment adjustment, and tubular or billet UCAs restore proper geometry — which is why Stage systems bundle them with the coilovers. Check your year and model for the right part number.

How hard is a Stage 2 system to install?

It's a bolt-on job using factory mounting points, but budget a full day and get a professional alignment afterward. Coilover spring compression and control-arm bolts are torque-critical, so a shop install is the safe call if you're new to suspension work.

Will a lift kit make my truck ride rougher?

Not with a matched system. ICON coilovers are valved for the increased lift height, so the ride usually improves over stock on and off road. Cheap spacer-only lifts are the ones that ride rough — this collection is built around full replacement dampers instead.

Do I need a tune after lifting my truck?

No. Suspension changes don't affect engine management, so no tune is required. You will need an alignment, and larger tires may call for a speedometer recalibration — that's separate from the engine tune.
