Performance Shocks & Struts

The best shocks and struts depend on how you drive: Bilstein B6 Performance kits suit a stock-height car on factory springs, while shorter B8 Performance Plus kits pair with lowering springs; rebound-adjustable Koni Sport Yellows are the favorite when you want to dial in the ride yourself. If you are running factory springs and want sharper handling without lowering, pick a stock-height performance damper. If you are lowered, match it with a shortened damper so travel and spring control stay correct. Either way, an alignment after installation is non-negotiable.

What Shocks and Struts Do

Shocks and struts control how your springs move. Worn dampers let the car bounce, float, and wallow through corners, while fresh performance dampers sharpen turn-in, reduce body roll, and keep tires planted. This collection covers shocks (usually rear) and struts (front assemblies where damper and spring mount together) — a standalone upgrade you can do on your existing springs. Look for vehicle-specific fitment, whether kits are full sets or per-corner, and whether they suit stock or lowered ride height — lowering springs need a damper with the right travel. Bilstein is the German damper specialist behind the monotube gas-pressure design, which keeps gas and oil separate for consistent damping and fade resistance. The B6 Performance kits are sized like the OE damper for a sporty ride at factory height, while the B8 Performance Plus kits are shortened specifically for lowering springs — see the Bilstein B6 Performance Kit for 15-21 WRX/STI and the Bilstein B8 Performance Plus Kit for 15-21 WRX/STI in this collection.

KYB is one of the largest shock absorber manufacturers in the world and a major supplier of OE dampers, which gives its aftermarket range a strong fitment-first character. Its lineup runs from OE-style replacements to the Gas-a-Just monotube upgrade and the AGX adjustable line — better-than-stock damping without committing to coilovers.

Koni is the damper brand generations of autocrossers grew up on, famous for the bright-yellow Sport line. Koni Sport shocks are externally rebound-adjustable in most applications — a knob lets you add or subtract damping without removing the shock — and they pair well with moderate lowering springs, generally up to about 35 mm.

Shocks & Struts FAQ

Will performance shocks work with my stock springs?

Yes, with a stock-height damper like the Bilstein B6, which is designed for OE springs at factory height. The B8 is a shorter damper meant for lowering springs — matching damper length to spring height keeps travel correct.

Do I need an alignment after installing shocks or struts?

Yes. Any front strut replacement changes camber and toe, so get an alignment right after install. Skipping it wears tires unevenly and dulls the handling gain.

How hard is the installation?

Rear shocks are usually a simple bolt-on job. Front struts are more involved because the spring must be compressed and transferred to the new strut — a job for a shop or a well-equipped garage with a proper spring compressor.

Do I need a tune after upgrading shocks?

No. Dampers are a purely mechanical upgrade that changes no engine parameters, so no ECU tuning is required. Just double-check your year and model on the fitment list.
