2008-2014 Subaru WRX Intakes

The best intakes for the 2008-2014 WRX are systems built around the turbocharged EJ engine's factory airbox and MAF sensor: either a sealed short-ram intake or a drop-in high-flow panel filter. The two most common paths are the COBB SF Intake, a complete intake system with an enclosed airbox, and the GrimmSpeed Dry-Con panel filter, which drops into the factory airbox for a simpler install. On these years, changing the intake piping alters MAF scaling, so a tune is recommended to get the full benefit safely.

A performance intake reduces the restriction the turbo breathes through, sharpening throttle response and making turbo spool more audible. Look at filter media first: dry synthetic media like GrimmSpeed's Dry-Con never needs oiling and can't foul the MAF sensor, while oiled cotton trades a bit more flow for regular cleaning and re-oiling. An enclosed box keeps intake temperatures down in traffic, and many 2008-2014 WRX owners also add a silicone turbo inlet hose, which replaces the factory accordion hose that can collapse under boost.

COBB Tuning is a longtime pillar of the Subaru aftermarket, with catalog coverage stretching back to the 2002 WRX. The COBB SF Intake pairs a large velocity-stack cone filter with a heat-isolating airbox, and COBB's silicone turbo inlet V2 covers the 2008-2021 STI as well. GrimmSpeed is a Subaru-centric company known for engineering-first parts, and its Dry-Con panel filter fits the factory 2008-2021 WRX airbox so owners gain flow without changing intake geometry. Tomei is a Japanese tuning-parts maker whose silicone turbo inlet hoses are a staple of turbo Subaru builds, replacing the restrictive factory inlet with a smooth heat-resistant hose. Mishimoto is best known for cooling-system upgrades, and its plug-and-play aluminum fan shroud kit for the 2008-2015 WRX/STI shows the brand's reach into supporting intake-side cooling hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 2008-2014 WRX need a tune for an intake?

Most full intake systems change the MAF housing diameter, so a tune is strongly recommended. Drop-in panel filters keep the factory MAF housing and are the safe no-tune option.

Short ram or cold air for a daily-driven WRX?

A sealed short-ram design like the COBB SF protects against heat soak better than an open cone and avoids the hydrolock concern of fender-mounted intakes. For a daily driver, a sealed box or panel filter is the practical choice.

Is the turbo inlet hose worth upgrading with the intake?

The factory inlet is an accordion-style hose that can collapse under higher boost. A silicone inlet smooths airflow into the turbo and is a natural companion to any intake upgrade.

Will an intake make the car noticeably louder?

Yes — turbo and bypass-valve sound is the most immediate change. Power gains are modest without a tune, but response and sound improve right away.
