Owning a Subaru WRX means you're a driver who is serious about your car’s handling, and you may have already customized it to some extent. One of the most frequent types of customizations involves the use of coilovers. To simplify its purpose, a coilover is a suspension system combining a shock absorber and a spring.
What Are They?
Shock absorbers typically control the degree of impact the road makes on your car. Traditional shock absorbers use fluid or gas to cushion the impact made on your car by the road. Struts are coil springs often attached over the shock absorber to help cushion the road impact. A coilover joins those two parts using a spring that’s threaded into the shock absorber.
You can use the height of where the screws enter the shock absorber to choose the height of your car. Coilovers can, therefore, lower your Subaru's center of gravity and add steadiness to the chassis. These changes allow you to control your skill in cornering. It can also increase the degree of control you are able to exercise over your driving style. Installing coilovers will enable you to adjust these factors to suit your driving style.
What Are the Benefits?
With a lower center of gravity in your vehicle, you won't feel every harsh vibration from road surface changes. At the same time, they will be able to decrease body roll and increase traction while driving. Many drivers praise the difference in the car's damping ability (reducing noise while driving.)
Within a coilover, the springs hold the weight of your car. This means that when you install your coilovers, choosing the strongest coils is vital. The degree to which the springs control the movement of your car is called coil springs. If you're new to coilovers and don’t yet know how to choose the correct coil spring, ask your coilover dealer for their advice.
How Are they Attached to the Car?
On top of a coilover, you'll find a top mount. This device is the way the coilover is securely attached to the car. Between the top mount and the vehicle are bushings which are intended to reduce the friction between your car's moving coilover and the nonmoving underside. Bushings are typically made of rubber, but some – called pillow balls – are made of metal.
Coilovers will make a tangible difference to the performance of your car. Reducing the impact of road texture changes will allow your vehicle to reduce the effort it must make to drive. With less effort, your car will save gasoline even when it uses an increased speed. Coilovers come in various colors and styles, enhancing the customized style of your car.
