Know Your Engine Before You Order

The 2015-2021 STI runs the EJ257, a 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer-four Subaru carried over from the previous Impreza-based STI. The WRX moved on. Every 2015-2021 WRX uses the FA20DIT, a completely different 2.0-liter, direct-injection turbo engine with its own intake manifold, throttle body, and MAF housing.

That's why intakes for Subaru builds for the WRX, like Perrin's turbo inlet pipes, are marked for FA20 fitment only; several listings even carry a direct "does not fit STI" warning. Shop this collection and every Subaru STI intake here is made for the EJ257's larger displacement and different intake tract.

The 2018-2021 STI also runs higher boost, up from 14.5 PSI to 16.2 PSI starting with the Type RA, so a properly sized filter and housing matter even more.

Choose the Right Intake System for Your STI

Not every intake fitted for Subaru's STI solves the same problem. Open-element cold air intakes maximize airflow and give you that turbo induction sound, while enclosed setups like a heat-shielded box keep intake air temperature down when the engine bay gets hot on a track day.

A Subaru STI cold air intake swaps the restrictive factory box and paper filter for a larger opening and a reusable filter element, the most common first mod on an EJ257 because it's simple to install and pairs cleanly with almost every tune. Builders chasing bigger numbers pair the intake with an upgraded turbo inlet, intercooler, and a proper Accessport or standalone map, since airflow gains on their own only go so far without supporting fuel and boost control.

JDMuscle carries EJ257-specific kits from brands enthusiasts already trust, including Process West, HKS, GrimmSpeed, and MAPerformance, backed by same-day shipping and a price match guarantee.

    FAQs

Will a 2015+ WRX intake fit my Subaru STI?

No. The WRX runs the FA20, a 2.0-liter engine, while the STI keeps the EJ257 through 2021. The intake tract, MAF housing, and manifold don't match between a WRX intake and a Subaru STI intake.

What's the easiest first intake upgrade for an EJ257?

A drop-in filter or open cold air intake is the simplest place to start. Both fit inside the factory airbox location and don't require a tune to run safely at stock boost.

Does a Subaru STI intake require a tune?

A drop-in filter doesn't. A full cold air intake or short ram intake changes airflow enough that most owners run an Accessport map or custom tune to keep fueling correct.
