Cold Air Intake Maintenance: Keeping Your Subaru BRZ Performing at Its Best

A cold air intake is a great way to easily improve your Subaru BRZ's performance. However, if it's not maintained properly, you can actually lose power. At JDMuscle, we offer Subaru BRZ parts, including cold air intakes. However, we also want you to know how to make the most of your high performance parts. Let's dive into caring for your cold air intake.

Why Clean Your Cold Air Intake?

Cold air intakes increase the amount of air to your engine. Of course, this air should be free of debris for best performance. When your Subaru pulls in air from outside, it can contain many contaminants that you don't want in your engine. This can affect your car's horsepower and gas mileage.

What You'll Need to Clean and Maintain Your Intake

You'll need a few items to clean your cold air intake. You should have a clean rag or two, warm water, cleaner, and oil. You can purchase the cleaner and oil separately, but it's simpler to purchase them in a kit. This makes the process a bit simpler. Be sure that the cleaner and oil you get are compatible with the air filter you have.

Cleaning Your Air Filter

You'll want to clean your air filter when you change your oil. This makes it simple to remember, and prevents your air filter from losing too much efficiency.

Remove Large Pieces of Debris

The first step to cleaning your filter is to wipe the outside with a clean cloth. Then, you'll remove the filter. Tap it on a hard surface to remove most of the larger particles and clumps. If there are still large pieces of debris in the filter, you can use a soft brush to remove the debris.

Use Filter Cleaner

The next step to cleaning your filter is to use a filter designed for cleaning. You should follow the directions on the package. Generally, you'll saturate the filter with the spray, and then allow it to sit for a set amount of time.

Rinse and Dry the Filter

Once the cleaner has had time to work, you'll rinse the filter. Use low pressure warm water. Be sure to part the pleats gently to rinse them. You'll know this step is done when there's no residue from the cleaner left behind.

Now, you should allow the filter to dry. First, shake it gently to remove excess water. Then, place it in a dry location. You'll need to give it at least 30 minutes to 1 hour, but overnight is optimal.

Oil Your Filter

Now you are ready to oil your filter. Decide how much oil you'll need for your filter and put it into the applicator. You should start in the middle. Make two to three passes around the middle of the filter.

Then, you'll repeat the process at the top and bottom of the filter. Take care to distribute it evenly, without over-saturating it. Allow the oil to sit for at least 30 minutes before moving to the next step.

Inspect and Replace

Next, you will need to inspect the filter. Check for any areas that aren't oiled. Apply a small amount of oil to these areas. Allow the oil to dry completely. Now you are ready to reinstall the filter.

Replace the filter, and wipe the cover. Now you are ready to use your clean air filter.
