Axle Back vs Cat Back Exhausts: What's The Difference?

You want the highest-quality equipment for your Subaru WRX in 2024 and beyond. An exhaust upgrade can lend the vehicle additional performance while sounding and looking great. But which type of exhaust system should you choose for your WRX?

An axle back exhaust upgrade replaces the exhaust system from the rear axle to the very back of the exhaust system, where fumes are expelled. These systems are cost-effective and can represent major upgrades to any WRX. Expect increased horsepower, responsiveness, and a new engine tone you’ll love to hear whenever you turn the key.

Cat-back exhaust systems are far more expensive and complicated. These replace all system parts, from the catalytic converter to the exhaust system's rear. They’re trickier to install, so there’s often the additional cost of hiring a professional mechanic to ensure the job is done correctly.

Subaru WRX enthusiasts who take care of their maintenance jobs should be able to handle installing an axle back exhaust system with no problems. While gaining additional performance from a cat-back exhaust system is possible, the costs often outweigh the benefits. Both types of exhaust offer a significant performance improvement from the default vehicle’s exhaust, so racers and other WRX lovers will almost always opt for one of these upgrades.

How Aftermarket Exhausts Are Better Than OE

OEM (original equipment manufacturer) exhausts are the standard for a vehicle when it's bought as new. While these exhausts will meet baseline performance standards, they’re often not built with speed and power in mind. Instead, they’re designed to ensure vehicles meet emissions tests and other regulatory requirements.

That’s why so many vehicle owners who are serious about performance choose an aftermarket exhaust system. These systems are built with the highest quality materials and wider pipe diameters than most OE alternatives. The system is designed to improve exhaust flow and boost efficiency, leading to a more responsive vehicle with higher available horsepower.

Of course, it’s not all about power and performance. Many vehicle owners love how an aftermarket exhaust sounds or how they can pick and choose a louder or quieter exhaust as needed. Many aftermarket WRX axle back exhaust upgrade options are engineered so the muffler carries less weight, helping improve performance. The right exhaust tip can also significantly improve the aesthetic appeal of your WRX, ensuring your Subaru looks sharp in 2024 races or meets.
