The best pistons for a built Subaru EJ257, EJ20, or Nissan SR20DET are JE's forged piston kits, machined from forged aluminum to handle the cylinder pressures of turbocharged power well beyond what cast factory pistons can take. If your build involves more boost, a bigger turbo, or a bottom-end refresh, forged pistons are the foundation everything else sits on.

Forging aligns the aluminum grain structure, letting the piston survive higher combustion temperatures and pressures without cracking or collapsing ring lands. That is why nearly every serious turbo build starts with forged slugs. This collection includes full kits, singles, and universal ring sets — full kits for complete rebuilds, singles when only one piston needs replacing.

Bore size, compression ratio, and wrist pin specs must match your build — these are not one-size parts, so check your year, model, and engine code carefully. If you change compression ratio, the rest of the build (head gasket thickness, tune) needs to match.

Popular brands: JE Pistons leads this collection with the most common Subaru and Nissan turbo fitments. Shop related internals in connecting rods, and compare fellow forged-piston specialists Wiseco, CP Pistons, and Manley Performance.

Featured kits: the JE Ultra Series EJ257 piston kit (8.5:1, 100mm bore) for built STI bottom ends, and the JE 86mm piston and ring set for the SR20DET. Planning a motor build? Start with a guide to Subaru engine modifications.

Do I need a tune after installing forged pistons?

Yes. Forged pistons usually change compression ratio and ring clearances, and the engine must be tuned to match. A built bottom end without a proper tune is how fresh motors die early — budget the tune as part of the build.

How hard is it to install pistons?

Engine-out work. Installing pistons means a full teardown: honing or boring the cylinders to match piston clearances, filing rings, and reassembly with precise torque specs. This is engine-builder territory unless you have the tools and experience.

What bore size do I need?

It depends on your cylinder condition: standard bore if the walls are healthy, oversized (like 100mm on an EJ257) if the block is being bored. Never guess — have your machine shop measure and spec it, since pistons are non-returnable once ordered.
