The best intercooler for a turbocharged WRX, STI, or similar car depends on your power level: a quality top-mount upgrade handles bolt-on street builds, while a front-mount intercooler (FMIC) is the right call once you're pushing past stock-turbo airflow. Either way, cooler, denser intake charge means more consistent power and safer knock margins.

An intercooler cools the hot compressed air leaving the turbo before it reaches the engine — colder air is denser, so the engine makes more power on the same boost. Top-mount intercoolers sit on the engine under the hood scoop for short piping and quick throttle response, while front-mount kits relocate the core behind the bumper for much greater cooling capacity and lower pressure drop. This collection covers both styles, including ETS and GrimmSpeed front-mount kits for the 2015–2021 WRX, Process West Verticooler and top-mount kits for the 2008–2014 WRX, and OLM intercooler grilles that dress up the scoop opening.

Popular brands in this collection include ETS (Extreme Turbo Systems), GrimmSpeed (GrimmSpeed), Process West (Process West), OLM (OLM), and Mishimoto (Mishimoto Cooling Parts).

Pair your intercooler with upgrades from cooling, radiators, and oil coolers. Featured kits: the ETS [15-21 WRX] Front Mount Intercooler and the GrimmSpeed [15-21 WRX] Front Mount Intercooler Kit. Learn more in Why You Should Install An Intercooler Kit.

Do I need a tune after installing an intercooler?

A tune is strongly recommended — and required by most tuners — after a front-mount intercooler install, since the larger volume changes how the car fuels and boosts. Check with your tuner before driving hard on a new FMIC.

Front-mount vs top-mount: which is better for a daily driver?

For a mild street build, an upgraded top-mount keeps throttle response sharp with minimal install work. Go front-mount when heat soak becomes the limit — typically at stage 2 and beyond.

Will a front-mount intercooler cause turbo lag?

Slightly — the longer piping adds a small amount of volume to fill, but on a well-designed kit the difference is minor and the cooling gains far outweigh it.

Is an intercooler grille just cosmetic?

Mostly, yes — an intercooler grille like OLM's protects the fins from road debris and cleans up the scoop opening, but it doesn't change cooling performance.
