Borla Exhaust Systems

The best Borla exhaust for a WRX depends on how loud you want to go: the S-Type delivers Borla’s signature deep, balanced tone for daily driving, while the ATAK is the loudest, most aggressive system in the lineup. Both are full stainless steel cat-back systems with bolt-on fitment, and this collection covers the 2015–2021 and 2022–2026 WRX, the 2022–2026 BRZ/GR86, plus select Lexus IS applications. If you want presence without drone on the highway, start with the S-Type; if maximum volume is the goal, the ATAK is the answer.

A cat-back replaces everything from the catalytic converter back — mid-pipe, mufflers, and tips — which is where most of an exhaust’s sound character comes from. An axle-back swaps only the rear muffler section: cheaper and easier to install, with a milder change in volume. When comparing systems, weigh tip finish (polished vs. ceramic black), muffler design, and how each series behaves at cruising RPM, since drone matters more than peak loudness on a daily driver.

About Borla

Borla is one of the longest-running names in American performance exhaust, known for straight-through muffler designs that prioritize flow and a clean, deep tone over chambered restriction. The lineup is organized by sound level — Touring for subtle, S-Type for the sporty middle ground, ATAK for all-out aggression — so buyers can pick volume almost like a trim level. Systems are built from stainless steel with mandrel-bent tubing, TIG-welded construction, and distinctive tip options like the polished and ceramic black finishes seen on the WRX applications here. Borla’s systems carry the company’s well-known million-mile warranty, and the brand’s Subaru coverage runs deep across the VA and VB WRX generations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between S-Type and ATAK?

S-Type is Borla’s balanced sport exhaust — deep and aggressive under throttle, civilized at cruise. ATAK uses a more aggressive core design for maximum volume and is noticeably louder everywhere. Both fit the same applications, so the choice is purely about sound preference.

Will a Borla cat-back drone on the highway?

S-Type systems are tuned to keep cruising RPM drone minimal, which is why they suit daily drivers. ATAK systems trade some of that refinement for volume. If you are sensitive to drone, the S-Type is the safer pick.

Does a cat-back exhaust require a tune?

No — a cat-back or axle-back alone does not require a tune on the WRX, BRZ/GR86, or Lexus IS applications here. Power gains are modest; the main payoff is sound, looks, and reduced weight versus stock.

What is covered under warranty?

Borla backs its exhaust systems with a million-mile warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Keep your proof of purchase, and check your year and model fitment before ordering to make sure the system matches your car.
