Your factory crank pulley transfers energy from the crankshaft to the water pump, A/C compressor and alternator by way of a rubber belt. Its drawback is that it is quite heavy. GrimmSpeed notes the factory pulley's mass smooths out noise in the accessory system and does not function as a harmonic dampener.
