The best upgrades for a 2004-2007 Subaru STI build on what made the GD STI a legend: its driver-controlled center differential, factory Brembo brakes, and robust turbocharged drivetrain. Start with a cat-back exhaust and a proper tune to unlock the 2.5-liter turbo engine, then add suspension, wider wheels with the right brake clearance, and cooling upgrades to make the car faster everywhere — not just in a straight line.

The first US-market STI remains one of the most rewarding performance platforms ever sold here: a 6-speed manual, DCCD all-wheel drive you can tune to your driving style, and a chassis that shrugs off track abuse. Twenty years on, the aftermarket is deeper than ever — but these cars also demand respect for maintenance, since worn bushings, tired struts, and neglected fluid service dull the precision that defines the STI experience.

Popular brands for the GD STI include Invidia, whose N1 Racing cat-back is built specifically for 04-07 STI and 02-07 WRX, Cobb for tuning solutions, and Seibon for carbon fiber hoods, trunks, and aero. The Borla unequal-length header delivers the signature boxer rumble on STI models too. Cross-shop the 2006-2007 WRX collection for shared GD-chassis parts or step up to the 08-14 WRX/STI generation, and read our WRX vs STI comparison to see how the two platforms differ.

Will WRX parts fit my 2004-2007 STI?

Many GD-chassis parts interchange, but the STI differs in key areas: bigger Brembo brakes (wheel fitment matters), different hubs and suspension geometry, and a 6-speed drivetrain. Always check the listing's fitment notes for STI compatibility.

Do I need bigger brakes for track use?

The factory Brembos are excellent — most owners just need high-temperature pads, performance fluid, and cooling ducts rather than a big-brake kit. Make sure aftermarket wheels clear the Brembo calipers before buying.

Is a tune required after exhaust and intake mods?

Yes for anything beyond a cat-back. The STI's turbocharged engine is sensitive to airflow changes, and a professional tune both protects the engine and delivers the power the parts promise.

What should I check on a used GD STI before modifying?

Verify DCCD operation, check for strut clunk (a known wear item), inspect for rust on rear quarters and subframes, and confirm service history. Starting from a healthy car makes every upgrade more effective.
