2022+ Subaru WRX Oil System

The best oil system upgrades for a 2022+ Subaru WRX (VB, FA24) are the ones that address the factory PCV system: a baffled oil catch can or an air/oil separator from Mishimoto, IAG, Radium Engineering, or Perrin traps oil vapor before it recirculates into the intake, keeping valves and intercooler piping cleaner on a direct-injected turbo engine. For a street-driven VB, a single PCV-side catch can or AOS is the standard, proven first step.

The FA24 in the VB WRX is direct-injected, which means fuel never washes the intake valves — oil vapor from the crankcase ventilation system can accumulate on them over time, along with oil film in the intercooler and charge piping. A catch can condenses that vapor and collects the liquid oil in a small reservoir you drain periodically. An air/oil separator (AOS) does the same job but returns the separated oil to the sump automatically, so there's nothing to drain — a set-and-forget solution that many daily drivers prefer.

Mishimoto is one of the biggest names in Subaru cooling and oiling upgrades, known for application-specific parts with strong engineering behind them — its baffled catch can for the VB WRX targets the PCV side where most oil vapor originates. IAG has built a reputation as a Subaru specialist shop and parts manufacturer, and its air/oil separator for the 2022+ WRX is a popular bolt-on in the community for keeping the FA24's intake tract clean. Radium Engineering approaches fuel and oil systems with a motorsport mindset, and its VB catch can kits use a "fluid lock" design aimed at consistent separation under hard driving.

Catch can vs. air/oil separator — which do I need?

A catch can collects oil you drain manually, usually at oil changes; an AOS drains the separated oil back to the engine automatically. Both address the same PCV blow-by — the AOS is more hands-off, the catch can lets you monitor how much oil your engine is pushing out.

Do I need a tune for a catch can or AOS?

No. Catch cans and air/oil separators are plumbing in the PCV system and don't change airflow metering or fueling, so no tune is required — check your year and model for fitment.

PCV side or CCV side — does it matter?

Most street setups target the PCV side, where the majority of oil vapor travels under normal driving. Track and high-boost cars may benefit from addressing both sides — the product page will specify which side each kit covers.

Will this void my warranty?

A catch can or AOS modifies the emissions-related PCV system, so a dealer could question engine or emissions warranty claims. Many owners keep the stock PCV plumbing for warranty visits — check your year and model for fitment.
