Why Your New Taillights Have Condensation (And When to Worry)

Seeing fog inside your brand-new taillights or headlights? It's usually normal condensation from shipping — here's why it happens, when it clears, and when to claim warranty.

OLM Spec-AR LED Taillights for 2022+ WRX

You just unboxed your new taillights. They look incredible — until you notice it: a light fog on the inside of the lens. Your stomach drops. Defective? Is water going to fry the LEDs?

Take a breath. In most cases that haze is completely normal, and it goes away on its own. Here's why it happens, what's normal, and exactly where "normal" becomes "contact us."

Why it happens

Your lights traveled a long way — through shipping containers, warehouses, and trucks that swing through big temperature and humidity changes. Along the way, a small amount of moisture gets trapped inside the housing.

Modern taillights and headlights aren't vacuum-sealed. They breathe through tiny vents (they have to — the air inside expands and contracts with temperature). That breathing is by design, so some moisture exchange with the outside air is normal, especially on a brand-new set fresh out of the box. This applies to headlights too, not just taillights.

What's normal

  • A light haze or fog on the inside of the lens, especially in the morning or after a cold night
  • It clears after driving with the lights on — the heat evaporates the moisture and the vents do the rest
  • Gone within 1–2 weeks of regular use

Heat is the cure. Install them, drive the car, let the heat cycles work. Parking in the sun helps. One note: full-LED sets run cooler than old halogen bulbs, so the haze can take a little longer to burn off — still inside that 1–2 week window.

What's NOT normal — contact us

  • Water pooling at the bottom of the housing, or droplets running down the inside of the lens
  • Fog that never clears, or keeps getting worse
  • Condensation still there after 2 weeks of normal driving

See any of that? Reach out — it's covered. Email sales@jdmuscleusa.com or call/text 1-866-833-3536 and we'll take care of you under warranty.

Two things NOT to do

  1. Don't open the housing or drill extra vent holes. It voids the warranty and almost always makes sealing worse, not better.
  2. Don't blast the seals with a pressure washer. A garden hose is fine; a 0° nozzle at point blank is how water gets past seals that would otherwise last years.

TL;DR

Light fog inside new taillights or headlights = normal, clears in 1–2 weeks of driving. Standing water, running droplets, or fog that won't quit = contact us for warranty.
