Competition Clutch Kits

The best clutch kit for your WRX or STI comes down to how you drive: a Stage 2 organic sprung clutch kit is the right call for a daily-driven WRX with bolt-on modifications, while a Stage 3 segmented ceramic clutch kit holds the extra torque of a built or heavily modified STI without slipping. Either way, pairing the new clutch with a matching steel flywheel gives you a fresh friction surface and crisp engagement.

Your clutch is the link between the engine and the transmission — the disc, pressure plate, and flywheel work together to transfer power as you release the pedal. Performance clutch kits raise the torque capacity through stronger pressure plates and performance friction materials. When shopping, compare the disc material (organic for smooth street engagement, ceramic for high heat tolerance), whether the hub is sprung or unsprung, and the clamp load rating against your torque output.

Installation is a transmission-out job, so most owners have a shop handle it. Plan for a proper break-in — typically around 500 miles of city driving before any hard launches — and replace or resurface the flywheel at the same time so the new disc beds in on a true surface.

Competition Clutch anchors this collection with stage-based clutch kits and forged steel flywheels built around real-world Subaru applications: Stage 2 organic sprung kits for 2006-2017 WRX and 2004-2021 STI models, and Stage 3 segmented ceramic kits for higher-torque builds. Their flywheel line covers the same popular chassis, so a matched clutch-and-flywheel combo is easy to spec.

Exedy is the long-standing Japanese clutch specialist whose OE-spec and performance clutches are known for smooth engagement and factory-like drivability — a natural comparison when you're weighing a milder upgrade path.

McLeod Racing is known for performance clutch kits aimed at higher-power builds — worth a look if you're cross-shopping stage options for a car that makes serious torque.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a tune after installing a clutch kit?

No — a clutch swap doesn't change the engine's airflow or fueling, so no retune is required. If you're adding power mods at the same time, like a turbo upgrade, tune for those.

Is a clutch install a DIY job?

It's a transmission-out job that takes a full day even for experienced wrenchers. Most owners have a professional shop do the work.

How long is the break-in period?

Plan on roughly 500 miles of normal city driving before hard launches or track use, so the disc beds into the flywheel evenly. Check your year and model for the specific procedure.

Should I replace the flywheel too?

Yes — install the new clutch on a fresh surface. This collection includes matching steel flywheels for popular WRX and STI applications.
