2015-2021 Subaru WRX Exhaust Systems

Cat-Back, Axle-Back or Downpipe?

Three paths, three different outcomes.

An axle-back replaces the rear section only. It’s the easiest install, the cheapest entry point, and it changes the tone noticeably. But the power gains are minimal. Good if sound if your only goal.

A cat-back replaces everything from the car rearward. Larger piping reduces backpressure across the whole system, giving you a modest power bump alongside a fuller, deeper note. This is where most 2015 WRX exhaust builds land; the sweet spot of sound, performance, and cost.

A downpipe is where actual power lives. Replacing the restrictive factory downpipe unlocks meaningful gains on the FA20DIT, especially paired with a tune. Just know that most performance downpipes are off-road use only and will require tuning to run properly.

Building a complete system? Start with the downpipe if power is important, or the cat-back if you want the best sound-to-effort ratio. Get full loadouts from Blox Racing and Invidia with JDMuscle.

Finding the Right Sound

The best exhaust for Subaru WRX builds is whichever one you still love six months in; and that’s mostly about drone.

Drone is the low-frequency resonance that shows up at steady cruising RPM, usually between 2,000 and 3,000. It’s fine on a spirited backroad run and miserable on a two-hour highway drive. Resonated systems tame it. Non-resonated systems are louder and more aggressive, but you’ll hear about it on your commute.

Be honest about your driving. If the WRX is your daily, a resonated car-back gives you the note without the headache. If it’s a weekend car, go louder. Watch sound clips before you commit. And if you’re torn between two systems, chat with us. We’ve heard most of these arguments in person.
